Jennifer’s Camp was founded as a gesture of love and support for a young girl who touched all of us who worked at AARC in the early nineties.  Jennifer would visit her grandmother, a case manager at AARC, many times after school.  She was bright, funny and an inspiration to all of us and in spite of living with HIV since birth, she simply never let it become the focus of her life.  In keeping with that goal of focusing on the importance of children living with HIV having normal childhoods, AARC submitted a successful grant to the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1996, and the first summer camp for children with HIV and their primary caregivers became a reality.  Campers are able to participate in workshops, access counseling services, as well as be a part of activities such as horseback riding, canoeing, archery, nature hikes and swimming.

Held each year in the Texas Hill Country, Jennifer’s Camp has served over 1000 campers since its first camp and has received funding from the Milagro Foundation, the Tim Duncan Foundation, the Levi Strauss Foundation, David Robinson Foundation, Children Affected by AIDS Foundation and the Matthew & Catherine Reedy Charitable Trust.  Most importantly, Mr. Ray Chavez and the board of Fiesta’s annual Cornyation have made a point of providing the majority of funding for Jennifer’s Camp for the past five years with proceeds from their annual event.
